The Derrybrien Wind Farm Project, which ceased commercial operation in 2022, included the erection of 70 turbines, all associated construction works, including the works that were undertaken in response to the peat slide, the overhead power line and Agannygal substation which connects the site to the national electricity transmission system.
ESB, through its wholly owned subsidiary Gort Windfarms Ltd, has submitted applications with An Coimisiún Pleanála (previously An Bord Pleanála) for the Derrybrien Wind Farm Decommissioning Project.
Decommissioning is necessary following the decision by An Bord Pleanála to refuse substitute consent for the wind farm in February 2022 and a subsequent enforcement notice issued and served from Galway County Council in August 2024. Commercial operations ceased at Derrybrien Windfarm following the decision of An Bord Pleanála to refuse substitute consent.
